What is Stop Start Technology?
Start/stop systems ensure that the engine cuts out automatically when the vehicle is stationary and thus stops burning fuel. The engine re-starts automatically by pressing the clutch. Start/stop technology by Bosch has by now been implemented by numerous vehicle manufacturers – in compact cars, luxury limousines and powerful sports cars:
S5 A with AGM technology: for start/stop system and recuperation Special micro-glass-fibre mats tight packed between the lead plates of the AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) bind the electrolyte together. The high contact pressure minimizes the loss of active material with an extremely low internal resistance. The rapid reaction between the electrolyte and the plate material allows a greater quantity of energy to be supplied in demanding situations.
Start/stop systems demand a lot from the battery. The Bosch batteries S5 A and S4 E provide a reliable supply of power for the frequent starting and stopping operations. For start/stop systems and many electrical devices running With EFB technology (Enhanced Flooded Battery) the positive plate is coated with “polyester scrim”. This provides additional retention of the active material at the plate. The cycle resistance increases when compared to conventional batteries and the battery remains operational even under strong vibrations.
Regenerative braking involves a further task for the battery: It has to act as a buffer store for the electrical energy generated during braking. This energy is then made available when required to increase engine power and save fuel by enabling the alternator to be periodically deactivated (passive boost).
